In January 2011, The Cochrane Collaboration became a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Official Relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and was awarded a seat on the World Health Assembly, the WHO's decision-making body.
From 21-26 May 2012, the 65th World Health Assembly (WHA) will be held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Attending the Assembly on behalf of the Collaboration will be Lisa Bero, Director of the San Francisco Branch of the US Cochrane Center; and Elizabeth Waters, Co-ordinating Editor of the Cochrane Public Health Review Group.

Sally Green has stepped down as editor of the Cochrane Handbook and the Collaboration thanks her for the significant contribution she has made to both the online and hardback versions with her co-editor Julian Higgins. Julian will continue as editor and will now be joined by Mike Clarke (Co-ed, Methodology Review Group), Rachel Churchill (Co-ed, Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group), Miranda Cumpston (Training co-ordinator) and Jackie Chandler (Methods co-ordinator).

"Qualitative evidence synthesis: choosing the right approach", a new methods book published by Wiley-Blackwell, is now available. In this book, authors Karin Hannes and Craig Lockwood discuss the options available to researchers, including approaches that have not had a substantial uptake among researchers. It provides arguments for when and why researchers should opt for a certain approach to synthesis, the challenges they might face in doing so and the potential strengths and weaknesses of each approach.

The 2012 edition of RAP Nigeria, initially scheduled to start on 30 April, has been postponed and will now be held 1-7 July 2012. The postponement has been deemed necessary so that successful RAP applicants can also participate in the Nigerian Contributors' Meeting, which will take place 8-11July 2012.The deadline for applications to RAP Nigeria has also been extended to 9 May 2012, 16:00 (UTC +1).

Reviews for Africa Programme (RAP) Nigeria 2012 - Call for Applications
The Reviews for Africa Programme aims to train African health researchers and providers in the science of research synthesis and assist them to initiate and prepare Cochrane Systematic Reviews, ultimately for publication in The Cochrane Library.
The next edition of RAP will take off on April 30th 2012. The Nigeria Branch of the South African Cochrane Centre therefore invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the 2012 edition of RAP Nigeria. Colloquium registration, abstract and workshop submission now open
Registration for the 20th Cochrane Colloquium is now open, and submissions for abstracts and workshops are being accepted. This year's Colloquium will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, 30 September to 3 October 2012.

The Cochrane Collaboration’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nick Royle, left the Collaboration in mid-January 2012. Effective 1 March, the Collaboration’s Steering Group has appointed Paul Farenden as Interim Executive Director. Paul will serve in this capacity while a replacement CEO is being identified, a process which is likely to take several months.
